Summer concerts

Local summer concerts are the best!

Living in the greater Boston area is so much fun. We get to experience all four seasons (with a vengeance) along with all they have to offer; we have access to all sorts of neat museums (Ivan’s favorite is the Museum of Science) and tasty restaurants (check out The Spot in Watertown); we can visit parks, zoos, and arboretums; and best of all we’re surrounded by a plethora of talented children’s musicians!

One of my goals is to listen to and see in concert every single kids’ musician in the Boston area. I’m beginning to realize more and more that this is a really BIG goal!

Here are two more local musicians we just discovered and have been listening to. You’ve no doubt heard of them already—they’re pretty big names around here—but I’ll share them anyway. And if you know of any other local musicians who aren’t listed on my Favorite Performers list to the right, please let me know!

Jeremy Lyons Delta-Silly Music for KidsJeremy Lyons is a local favorite who puts on regular free shows at both Stellabella Toy Stores in Cambridge. He has a pretty big following!

His CD, Delta-Silly Music for Kids is a real gem. He records many traditional favorites, like Oh! Susanna and My Creole Belle (we just love this song). He has a very down-to-earth folk sound that everyone loves and his acoustic guitar is just amazing. Ivan’s favorite track on the CD is One Meatball, a very silly song about a poor man who only has enough money to buy one meatball (and no spaghetti). It’s a great song, but I think Ivan really likes the children on back-up vocals. He always loves to hear kids’ voices on CDs.

Definitely check him out if you get a chance. He’s at the Inman Square Stellabella on Saturday’s at 11am and the Porter Square store on Mondays at 11am.

Toe Jam in Outer SpaceThe Toe Jam Puppet Band is another one of those super hard working local bands. Check out their calendar of events and you’ll see what I mean. These guys are performing all over the state all the time!

They’ve got three CDs out and their newest, Toe Jam in Outer Space, is probably our favorite. I love how they get the kids involved in the recordings, reminding you of their live performances where kids are the center of the show. You can listen to samples from their CDs on their website: www.toejampuppetband.com.

But the Toe Jam Puppet Band is best experienced live. You can see what I mean by watching this YouTube video to the left.

They’ve got such great presence, both exciting and entertaining as well as simple and inviting.

The guys in the band are great at getting the audience involved in the music and, as you can see, the kids just have a blast!
