Didi in Hawai’i!

by Amber on November 3, 2010

DidiPop Goes to HawaiiI first met Deborah Poppink (aka DidiPop) through email, and was immediately taken by her sweet and honest personality. She just seemed so real and adorable.

Of course I was happy to find out that we also really liked her first album, the self-titled DidiPop, and my first impression of her stuck as we listened to a loving mom sing about her devotion to her kids and their everyday experiences.

When I learned that she was working on an album about Hawai’i, I was thrilled. I was born in Kaunakakai and raised on the Big Island (in Kona). Hawai’i is my first home, though I’m very happy to be in Massachusetts now! I knew Deborah would treat Hawai’i with care, sharing with kids and families the beauty of the islands and the way she and her family felt when they were there.

The album, DidiPop Goes to Hawai’i, is written from the point of view of someone who’s visiting Hawai’i and has sent these special songs to you so you can enjoy Hawai’i, too. The first song, Wowie Gazowie (Goin’ to Maui), even includes lines about being on an airplane and getting ready for a fun vacation. The CD ends with the song Going Home, so it’s a complete story.

Many of the songs are just about fun things that happened to Deborah and her family while in Hawai’i, like eating coconuts and mangoes or learning to swim at the beach, while other songs are more educational and teach kids about the Hawaiian language and alphabet. It’s a really nice well-rounded set of songs!

One of my favorites is I Like Pigs, because it’s so simple and sweet: Deborah and her kids see a pet pig in a neighbor’s yard and write a song about him. It’s so true! Pigs, chickens, and pheasants run free in Hawai’i yards. But watch out for those roosters! They can be mean!

DidiPop Goes to Hawai’i is set for release on December 14th. Meanwhile, check out this video for I Like Pigs:
