Our Favorite Songs About Food!

by Amber on July 22, 2009

Is it just me or is summer all about eating? Barbecues, parties, picnics, and lots and lots of family get togethers.

They always say it’s hard to stick to a diet during the holidays, but all these hot dogs and brownies aren’t helping either!

This of course gets us singing about food. Ivan loves the classic Wiggles CD Yummy Yummy and we always sing Fruit Salad while we eat fruit salad.

This got me to thinking about all the other fun songs about food and eating. Here are some of our favorites…

Putumayo Kids Presents: Picnic Playground.Putumayo Kids is about to release a fun new CD full of songs about food from around the world called Putumayo Kids Presents: Picnic Playground.

Ivan loves the song “Ice Cream” and I’m partial to “Let’s Bake Cookies,” a great song to sing while you have your kid in the kitchen with you.

The CD is set for release on July 28th.

One of our favorite songs by Ben Rudnick and Friends is Macaroni & Cheese. They almost always play it at their concerts so it must be one of their favorites, too. And who doesn’t love a good bowl of Macaroni and Cheese? They also sing a song called Drink It Up that’s just a feel-good song about how good life can really be.

Justin Roberts sings a great song, From Scratch, about a grandma who bakes everything from scratch for her family. It’s so sentimental and gets me feeling emotional every time I hear it, which is funny because neither of my grandmothers were very interested in cooking!

If you’re looking for sweeter fare, Recess Monkey sing about Marshmallow Farms and Hot Chocolate on their new album Field Trip (one of my favorites).

On the other hand, if you want your kids thinking about healthier foods, you could listen to SteveSongs’ The Veggie Song, which explains why it’s so important to eat well, or Vanessa Trien’s Bluenanas and Bananaberries, which whimsically mixes up fruits and will get your kids craving a crazy fruit salad.

The Spanglish Wrangler sings about a little girl who won’t eat anything but Broccoli and also sings the Desayuno Boogie (one of Ivan’s favorite songs). This is a great way to introduce a foreign language to your kids.

The Flannery Brothers also sing about Broccoli on their new CD, Love Songs for Silly Things. You can even find a song about Rutabaga on this CD. How neat is that?

And one more. Cathy & Marcy, along with Christylez Bacon, sing a toe-tapping, get-you-moving song about all sorts of different soups called Soup, Soup on their new album Banjo to Beatbox (which I highly recommend).

And if you’re looking for some tips on how to get your kids to eat healthy, check out this article on Healthy Eating Habits on our other site.

OK, all this talk of food has made me hungry! Let’s eat!

I’d add 23 Skidoo “I Like Fruit” to this list. Best line: “What’s better than a can a coke is a cantaloupe”.

I’ll have to check that out. :)

What an excellent list, Amber! I would add Cathy and Marcy’s fun CD Bon Appetit: Musical Food Fun, which won a Grammy Award:

and their new song – “Soup Soup” on the EP “Banjo to Beatbox” hear it on their site – http://www.cathymarcy.com
