Let’s Dance!

by Amber on March 16, 2010

We’ve been listening to a few new dancy CDs lately—CDs that make you want to get up and boogie. The funny thing is that they are all completely different genres: Rock, folk, and jazz.

Just goes to show that there’s a dance out there for everyone!

Ranky Tanky - Rani Arbo & Daisy MayhemRani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem is one of those groups that just hits you immediately with a “Wow!” We love folk music and bluegrass, and anything that includes a banjo or a mandolin is fine by us, so of course we were taken by Daisy Mayhem’s sound to begin with, but all I could think was, “Why haven’t we heard this band before? What have we been missing?”

Songs like Tennessee Wig Walk are just perfectly classic Americana and even some of the little itty-bitty songs, like Where Did You Get that Hat?, are pure gems. We really love Bear to the Left, a silly play on animal names, but the best part of this CD is the dancing beats! Check it out!

Putumayo Kids Presents Jazz PlaygroundPutumayo makes the best compilations. Their new album, Jazz Playground, is no exception! The first song, Stomp! Stomp!, gets you going right from the beginning. The first time we listened to this CD we were in the car and Ivan started Stomp-Stomping the back of my seat.

I love the jazzy version of Sur Le Pont d’Avignon since I’m mostly familiar with the tame Raffi version of this song and had no idea it could be so funky! And Agree & Disagree by the Australian band The Mighty Buzzniks is so good I had to go check out the rest of their music.

You can’t go wrong with Putumayo, but this one may be my favorite, at least for dancing. Celtic Dreamland is still my favorite for relaxing.

Joanie Leeds - I'm a Rock StarJoanie Leeds, a rock star in her own right, is releasing her second kids’ album, I’m a Rock Star, on March 23rd. It’s a fun CD, full of silliness and rocking, but mostly we’ve been enjoying the dance beats. Ivan loves the harder sounds, like the electric guitar, and gets a good whole-body-shake-dance going.

We like Sunglasses (always very cool) and Jump, Jump (so easy to jump along to). You can listen to samples from the CD here.

Have a fun dancing day!
