New Holiday Music for Kids

by Amber on November 30, 2009

Thanksgiving was late this year and I’m already preparing to decorate for Christmas and get into the holiday spirit. One of the best ways to create a holiday mood is through cheery music and there are some really cool children’s holiday CDs coming out this year. Here are our favorites…

Putumayo Presents A Family ChristmasPutumayo’s A Family Christmas is definitely my favorite new Christmas CD this year. I’m a sucker for those good old traditional holiday songs like Holly Jolly Christmas and Frosty the Snowman and this CD is packed with those classics.

But it also mixes things up a bit with some fun additions, like a new take on Louis Armstrong’s jazzy Is Zat You Santa Claus? and the old Christmas party song Boogie Woogie Santa Claus. As always, Putumayo has chosen an eclectic array of very talented artists and they include a booklet describing each song and artist that you can share with your kids. This CD would make a great gift!

Mama Doni Chanuka FeverIf you’re looking for some Chanuka fun, you’ll want to check out Mama Doni’s Chanukah Fever. Not being Jewish, I found this CD really very cool because there are songs about traditions I’m not familiar with, like The Legend of Sour Cream vs. Applesauce (well, what do you eat with your latke?) and A Land Called Sufganiyot (oh my goodness those sound yummy).

Mama Doni is fun and energetic and her songs are silly and entertaining. I’d love to see her perform live. And if you would too, then you’ll have to check her out tomorrow (December 1st) at the Worcester JCC at 6:30. Check out Mama Doni’s website for information about her CD and shows: www.MamaDoni.com.

The Hipwaders A Kindie ChristmasOr maybe you’re looking for some Christmas music that rocks? The Hipwaders have been creating rocking kids’ music for years and finally they’ve decided to put their talents to a holiday album with A Kindie Christmas, and you’re not going to be disappointed.

This CD moves from cool to super cool with awesome electric guitar and Tito’s classic vocals. My son loves the funky beat in It’s Wintertime and I love the fun positive messages in each song. And be sure to check out their silly animated video for Wake Up.
