Reading Our Way Across the USA!

by Amber on January 19, 2010

Judy Pancoast Weird Things are EverywhereJudy Pancoast just released a new CD, Weird Things are Everywhere, that’ll take you and your kids on a unique reading adventure across the United States!

Judy does a lot of work at libraries around New England encouraging reading with her “Take Me to Your Reader” program (you can watch her silly music video here), so it makes sense that she would put together an entire album about books and reading.

But the neat twist to this CD is that Judy takes us on a reading road trip, where we learn all sorts of interesting facts about the United States and books that have been written about it. Judy skillfully weaves story and song together throughout the album. She’ll talk about the road trip, tell us to buckle up, and explain what we’re seeing out the car windows. She explains how each state has a rich literary history and then takes the theme of the state and moves right into song.

In Superman Can we learn that Metropolis, Illinois bills itself as Superman’s hometown and that they even have a fifteen foot statue of Superman in the town square! In Once Upon a Time you’ll find out that the only real royal palace in the United States is located in Hawai’i and that Hawai’i was once ruled by a monarchy.

As an added bonus, the CD also comes with a big fold out map of the United States with drawings and explanations of the silly and fantastic things that Judy talks and sings about, as well as other cool new things to learn. On the back of the map is a list of all 50 states and books to read or places to visit. This CD just may encourage you and your family to take a local road trip and learn more about your area!

Hi Amber…Thanks so much for the great review…the first one for this CD!
But I’m dying to know, since I just read your review policy and now that you’ve had the CD awhile, which songs does Ivan really like the most?

His favorite is definitely Yucky – but he loves the Dog Did It, too. They’re all great songs!
