Serious or Silly?

Do you like your kids’ music serious or silly? Some artists really try to teach kids something in their songs, like Leeny and Tamara in their CD Sharing the Same Stars; while others just get goofy, like Kate Rowe with her song Space Rabbits of Brocklevoons.

Which is better?

Why Does Gray Matter?Roger Day sings all about the brain in his new CD, Why Does Gray Matter?. All of his songs are very educational and teach kids (and grown ups) about the different parts of the brain and how they work. He even has a song about concentration and one on brain foods. Of course, it’s a no brainer that the puns may get a little out of control, with a song about a girl named Sara Bellum, but I guess that just shows that Roger has found a way to balance the serious with a good dose of silly.

Robot Monkey HeadOn the other hand, John Hadfield just sings about silliness on his CD Robot Monkey Head. I mean, it’s a CD about Robot Monkey Heads! in I Like Beans he tells us that beans make you… smart. Of course! And he also sings about duct tape and dentures. But maybe, like Roger Day, John can mix in a little seriousness… nah, this CD is just silly!

It’s good to listen to both the serious and the silly, and some of the best artists, like SteveSongs, deftly combine the two. Kids love the structure and the learning in the serious messages, but of course they love to laugh and be silly, too!
