Steve Blunt & Friends

by Amber on September 11, 2009

I started this blog after going out to see great children’s shows in the Boston area that my son just loved. I wanted to share that music with others. But I never imagined that we would find more and more music through this site! Since we’ve been part of the music “scene” we’ve discovered so many amazing local musicians—I feel very lucky to be able to share these songs and shows with my family and with yours!

Our newest discovery is Steve Blunt, a children’s musician from New Hampshire. His songs are positive and fun to sing along to, and his guitar sounds are impressive (Ivan seems to think so, anyway, and I consider him a guitar aficionado).

But what I love most about Steve Blunt’s music is the lyrics. He reminds me a bit of Bill Harley with his intricate story telling and hidden jokes peppered throughout his songs. Many of his songs play on our assumptions, like Snow Day, a song about someone being happy that school is canceled for school. At the end of the song we find out that the somebody is really the teacher, because “even teachers get to play when school gets canceled for the day.”

I also love the song (You’ve Been Watching) Too Much Tv!, a song that warns us not to sit in front of the TV all day. The lyrics point out how easy it is to watch too much TV without even realizing it:

But I only watch a little in the morning
before I go to school.
A few cartoons in the afternoons
and a talk show as a rule.
I watch the news with dinner
then a sitcom or two or three or four.
I start to doze with the late-night shows,
And the TV’s on while I snore.

Sound familiar?
