What’s Happening This Weekend? April 10 & 11

by Amber on April 9, 2010

Kids playing.

As always, there’s a nice collection of shows this weekend, even a couple of classical music concerts, but there are two shows in particular that you have to know about…

Joe’s Backyard Band will be at the Regent Theatre in Arlington this Saturday at 10:30am. Their first CD, Kick Up a Breeze, is a wonderful collection of folksy kids’ songs about everything from partying to doing the dishes. The songs are fun, great to dance to, and I’m so impressed with their sax and harmonica players!

This will be the first time Joe and his band have played in Boston and they are also going to be playing with a guest balafon player from Mali (who has recorded with Yo-Yo Ma). What’s a balafon? It’s kind of like a really awesome West African xylophone. You’ll have to come to the concert to see what it sounds like!

The other big show of the weekend is Vanessa Trien at the Coolidge Corner in Brookline at 10:30 on Saturday. She’s sold out this show two years in a row! Vanessa and her band, the Jumping Monkeys, are so full of energy and their songs are simply some of the best around. Her two CDs, Hot Air Balloon and Carnival Day, are must-haves for any children’s music collection.

So, I’m sure you’ve noticed the dilemma. Both shows are on Saturday at 10:30! You’ll have to pick one or the other. Both theaters are wonderful venues and both bands are super fun. We’re going to see Joe’s Backyard Band simply because we’ve never seen them before and they might not be back for a while (plus we love their CD)—But since we have seen Vanessa Trien in concert I can say that her show is guaranteed to be awesome!

Which show will you be at this Saturday?
